Charmed By Edinburgh

Charmed By Edinburgh

@charmedbyedinburgh

Tell us a little bit about yourself - where are you based and what have you been enjoying lately?

I am based in beautiful Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. Most of my photography would be best described as urban or landscape, with occasional portraits or travel city shots.

In only a couple of words, how would you describe your style of photography?

My photography reflects where I live - it's moody, nostalgic and romantic

Tell us about one of your most memorable photoshoots or perhaps a favourite photo you have taken?

I am a bit of a loner when it comes to taking photos - partially because I love to shoot in that beautiful morning light which requires getting up before the sunrise, when everyone is asleep and the city is quiet. That's when I feel the happiest and the most myself - exploring beautiful buildings and different corners of Edinburgh. Somehow every time I go out on these walks by myself, I find new places and angles that I haven't noticed before. My most successful (I' m talking instagram success) photos were taken while on these dreamy, nostalgic early morning walks alone with just my camera and I think they did so well because the mood shines through the photos.

As a photographer, nurturing your creativity while trying to balance self employment and life can be a little tricky sometimes. Where do you find the inspiration to continue creating and maintaining consistency.

I love to pretend like I'm the main character in a book or a movie - on rainy days (and we have quite a few of those in Scotland!) I'll find a coffee shop with a window seat, order a hot chocolate and people watch through the window. I like to romanticise my daily life and visit old book shops and antique stores, I find that those places inspire me the most. I love looking at old books and vintage home accessories, trying to imagine who they used to belong to and how life was when these items were brand new.

Having grown as a photographer, is there any piece of advise that you could give to yourself when you first started down this path, or wish you had known sooner?

I'd tell myself to trust my gut when it comes to finding my own style and not compare myself to other amazing artists out there. I'd also self-educate to be more patient and take it slow - success doesn't happen in one day. But most importantly, I wish I could reassure my younger self and tell her that her work is good enough and she'll be just fine!

What gear are you currently using and what would you typically carry in your Kamrette camera bag?
I cannot imagine my life without my Kamrette camera bag, it keeps me company on every shoot! I have a Lyra backpack which is spacious enough to fit my portable tripod in, and I have that with me most of the time. In the bag i also carry my lovely Nikon D850 with a couple of lens, my go-to ones for urban photography are 24-70mm f2.8 for zoom and 50mm f1.4 for prime.
Let's finish it off with a fan favourite - if you could only have one lens, which one would you choose?

Ahh, it's a tough one! I'd probably go with 85mm f1.8 - nothing beats those deep macro shoots with beautiful shallow aperture.
